The late Quaternary tephra layers discovered in piston cores from the Ulleung Basin of the East Sea (Sea of Japan) were studied using X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRF), inductively coupled plasma atomic emission (ICP-AES) and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) in order to identify and differentiate the tephra layers and to characterize their major . Iceland provides an unique stage on which to study the natural environment, both past and present, and it is understanding both aspects of reconstructing the past and observing and interpreting the present that form the focus of the contributions to this volume. The papers are all written by active researchers and incorporate both reviews and new data.

Quaternary tephra layers abound in the Americas, especially in the western and central part. Few of them have been examined in detail.
At present, New-World archaeologists use tephra horizons mainly as marker beds for correlation purposes and, where the local tephra sequence has been dated, as rough age indicators for their sites. An illustration of an open book.
